Morning of the Match
I arrived early at the ground, hopeful that I might make the role of substitute for the match and found very few there. Gradually, one by one, all the others came in, including the reserves, who had a Combined Reserve League match against Jordanhill College that afternoon.
The management must have been keen to give some guys a run-out, as it was a strong side which boarded the bus for the trip to the college’s ground in the west end of the city.
The chosen side was John Kennedy, Ian Young, Frank McCarron, Davie Cattenach, John Cushley, John Gorman, John Taggart, ‘Newman’, Jim Clarke, Lou Macari and John Hughes.
Pre-Match
There was the usual chat with all the boys but I wasn’t paying a great deal of attention.
I was keen to hear the name of the substitute, which I thought was my only chance of getting a chance in the first team at that time. Eventually, after what seemed an age, the Boss motioned for all of us to go into the dressing room, where he announced the side. And when he got to the name of the substitute, it was Jim Brogan’s name that was announced.
Right at that point, I was not a happy man but I gritted my teeth, made a point of wishing everyone all the best and then took my bad temper to the tea room and eventually the stand.
The Teams
Celtic: Simpson, Gemmell, O’Neill, Murdoch, McNeill, Clark, Johnstone, McBride, Chalmers, Hughes, Auld. Sub Brogan
Hearts: Cruikshank, Shevlane, Holt, Barry, Anderson, Higgins, Jensen, Miller, Wallace, Kerrigan, Traynor. Sub Gordon
The Play
This was quite a good game to watch in the first half as both sides seemed, at least to begin with, to be fairly evenly matched. Chances were made at both ends – and missed on a fairly regular basis. By the interval, it was still goalless and the Hearts’ fans seemed the happier set of supporters.
Celtic came out for the second half looking more determined and made the most of the chances they created ;
54 minutes:
centre-half Barry lost possession to John Hughes, he passed quickly into the middle and Joe McBride slammed it home. 1-0 Celtic
68 minutes:
Joe went down the right wing and crossed for Stevie Chalmers to shoot home. 2-0 Celtic
73 minutes:
Barry again in trouble, this time handling the ball in the penalty area and Joe made no mistake from the spot. 3-0 Celtic
Post- Match
Unfortunately for Jim Brogan, he never got the chance to come on so I was happy enough that I had not had to sit on the bench for 90 minutes without getting a chance. Celtic’s first substitute would have to come on in another match.
