19th October: League Cup Final Preview #1

Praise

Both the morning and evening papers praised Celtic for the way they had risen to the challenge against Hibs the previous evening at Ibrox in the League Cup semi-final replay. I have already covered most of these comments in my report for the game. However, I could not resist showing one last headline which would have been very much to the liking of the management and players ;-

Tension

This was going to be long, tense week for a number of players at the park. Naturally, everyone wants to play in a League Cup final and those in contention hope with all their hearts that their name will be included on the team sheet.

Defence Gets the Thumbs Up!

John Fallon – breathing easily? – Daily Record

From my own position – as one who would not be in the side – I reckoned that the defence which played against Hibs in the semi-final replay had done enough to be chosen again. So that meant that John Fallon, Ian Young, Tommy Gemmell, Bobby Murdoch, Billy McNeill and John Clark could breathe easily, providing illness or injury did not strike any of them down during those final few days before the big occasion.

Less Certain

The forward line was a slightly different matter. In the semi-final replay against Hibs, the chosen ones had been Jimmy Johnstone, Charlie Gallagher, Joe McBride, Bobby Lennox and John Hughes. However, in the comfortable win for the reserve side against Falkirk on the previous Saturday, Stevie Chalmers had scored a hat-trick and Bertie Auld had convincingly controlled the mid-field. So, might the Boss be tempted to bring in one or other of that duo and if so, who would he leave out?

Meanwhile, while most Glaswegians would have had their minds set on the League Cup final on the forthcoming Saturday, other inhabitants of the city would have been very interested in a story in one of the evening papers;-

 ‘Nip’ Barmen Feel the Pinch

‘Barmen in 85 pubs took part in an experiment to find the fairest was of pouring a measure of whisky.

According to the results, the customer is much more likely to get full value for his money if his whisky is served from an automatic measure’.

You can just imagine the scenario and the language ; “Son, just you keeps yer haunds aff thae measuring jugs and use one o’ thae automatic gadgets!”
