POWER MAN HUGHES COMES BACK TO BUST UNITED
HUGHES ‘MAKES’ THE CELTIC GOALS
Those were the headlines in the sports pages of one of the daily papers on the 29th August 1965 and it fairly accurately summed up the proceedings at Parkhead the night before.
Another headline read;
HUGHES A WING-DINGER!
Obviously, after a great deal of thought, Jock Stein had decided to bring back John Hughes and ‘Yogi’ rose to the occasion, having a hand in all three goals ;
- 24 minutes: A shot by Hughes hits left-back Stuart on the arm. A penalty is awarded – and Ian Young makes no mistake from the spot.
- 29 minutes: Hughes turned a ball across the goalmouth and Stevie Chalmers knocked it home.
- 86 minutes…. Joe McBride gets a third goal, again from a Hughes pass.
It was a good return for a difficult decision and the points put Celtic right back in the running to qualify from a tricky section.
Their record now read P4, W2, D0, L2, F5, L4, Pts4.
A newspaper with more than a little bias towards Dundee sides commented;
UNITED’S FORWARDS MISFIRED AT PARKHEAD
Dundee United came away from Parkhead last night with a cheque for over £3000 and probably more importantly, no serious injuries to worry about for Wednesday’s vital derby with Dundee at Tannadice.
Celtic failed to produce the Tannadice form of midweek. Although they again won, this time by 3-0, the margin was most flattering.
Away from football, events round the world caught the eye;
A Big Night in Texas
USA President Lyndon Johnson, 57 today, intends to hold a special birthday party for 16 at his Texas ranch.
Ciggies Galore!
Glasgow detectives are hunting for a gang who carried out a brilliantly-planned raid on a city tobacco depot and escaped with 250,000 cigarettes.
The raid at Gallagher’s depot in Glasgow’s ‘Tobacco Row’ – Alexandra Parade –was discovered when staff arrived for duty.
Disaster in France
13 people were killed when the Milan-Paris express collided with the Lombardy express near Champagnole, Eastern France.
And possibly one good piece of news for Celtic fans received some prominence in the evening papers ;
The great mass of the faithful left behind in Scotland when Celtic fly out to battle with ‘Go-Ahead’ of Deventer in the European Cup-Winners’ Cup on September 29th MAY still be able to watch a kick-by-kick picture of the European tie in the comfort of a plush Glasgow picture house.
If they do, it will be by the courtesy and the enterprise of boxing promoter Peter Keenan, who was quoted yesterday as saying ;
There is no substitute for live football….but a live TV show is the next best thing!
