‘This was magnificent Celtic – a Celtic obviously intent on crushing the Hibs challenge with sheer football played at tremendous speed. But, in my opinion, most of the credit for the wonder display goes to Jock Stein. 

Before the game, Jock appeared on the Easter Road pitch and prodded practically every yard of it with his feet. Then he decided it was ready-made for the type of play Joe McBride can provide and straightaway McBride, out of the team against Zurich, was back in’.

The reference, of course, was to Bent Martin, the Danish keeper who was jousting with John Fallon for the position of under-study to Ronnie Simpson. He had been playing well whenever he got the chance in the reserves and this semi-final contest against Queen’s Park might be just the sort of occasion to blood a newcomer. A few other players, like myself, were keen to get an outing but frankly, the Boss was playing his cards very close to his chest.

There was a good deal of enthusiasm among the support for this match, as with Celtic having beaten Rangers 4-0 in the first round, the feeling was that no other team could stop them.

Four Celtic players were listed in the Scotland team to play Wales at Cardiff on the 22^nd October – Tommy Gemmell, John Clark Jimmy Johnstone and Joe McBride.

There was a rush for tickets in San Francisco for the showing of the Swedish film ‘Night Games’ which former child star Shirley Temple has described as pornographic. Miss Temple has now resigned from the festival committee. A queue 200 yards long formed outside the box office when the tickets went on sale.

Eric Brown and John Panton will represent Scotland in the 14^th Canada Cup tournament in Japan on November 10^th to 13^th. The holders – Garry Player and Harold Henning of South Africa – will be there to defend their title.
